WHAT IS NEWISH?

NEWISH is a scripted comedy-drama about Natasha, a Ukrainian immigrant who starts over in Canada just as she is about to turn forty.

Once a successful actress, she now works as a manicurist while navigating the everyday challenges of newcomer life: finding stable housing, making ends meet, adapting to a new culture, raising her daughter, and supporting her husband, Vlad, as he struggles with depression. Despite every setback, Natasha continues auditioning, hoping to build her acting career again. Her co-worker and friend Jay supports and helps her better understand the people and culture around her.

With humour, self-irony, and heart, Newish explores immigration, family life, and the realities of a midlife crisis, showing how the dream that defines us can keep us moving forward, even through life’s most difficult moments.
